Keith Legge, Chief Executive of SYHA Hostelling Scotland, is pleased to announce that on Thursday 6 October 2016 SYHA will be hosting a Youth Development Reception in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the opening of the flagship 270-bed five star Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel.
The reception, being held at Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel on Haddington Place from 17.00 to 19:00, also offers the perfect opportunity for the SYHA Board and staff members to acknowledge the sustained support from their youth partners on a number of very successful youth development projects over the last ten years.
It will also provide a platform for SYHA’s youth partners and other youth development organisations to share their respective knowledge and experiences whilst exchanging ideas to maximise all of the potential opportunities as they look ahead to VisitScotland’s Year of Young People in 2018.

SYHA Hostelling Scotland believe in the importance of enabling all young people to learn about Scotland’s landscape and heritage in a memorable and engaging way. SYHA have created a number of well-respected youth programmes and funded opportunities at some of Scotland’s most iconic and stunning locations. Their flexible options allow teachers to plan trips to meet curriculum needs as well as guaranteeing a positive learning experience.
SYHA’s youth partners include YouthLink Scotland, DofE, The Venture Trust, the Scout Association, YouthScotland, The Gannochy Trust, LGBT Youth Scotland and many others.

SYHA Hostelling Scotland Youth Programmes
Youth Active Grants
SYHA Youth Active Grants are provided by SYHA Hostelling Scotland to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in a school or youth group residential trip. The SYHA Youth Active Grants are available (subject to sufficient funds) to young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a residential trip due to their particular circumstances which result in social exclusion, deprivation or other disadvantage.
Give us a Break (GUAB)
Give Us A Break is the funded residential programme of SYHA Hostelling Scotland which aims to tackle social exclusion by offering groups of vulnerable or disadvantaged young people the opportunity to take part in activity holidays at youth hostels across Scotland. All of SYHA’s Youth Programmes are designed to help young people realise their full potential and to build confidence and self-esteem. For many it will be the first time they have had the opportunity to explore and experience what the Scottish countryside has to offer. Give Us a Break trips are made possible with the generous support of our funders Provident Good Neighbour Community Programme.
STE(A)M in the Outdoors
Outdoor learning is an ideal way to bring STE(A)M topics to life for children and young people. Based around themes such as renewable energy, engineering, art and design and construction, SYHA can offer a range of flexible programmes in a residential setting covering core areas of the Curriculum for Excellence starting from P6 to level 4.
Gannochy Trust
SYHA are delighted to have received a second year of funding towards offering two groups of up to 20 participants plus their teachers/leaders to participate in a two night residential stay for young people currently living in Perthshire and Tayside.

STE(A)M in the City and STE(A)M in the Country – In partnership with John Muir Award and Opal Field Surveys.
